Mentors Needed for Local Children
One individual can make a significant difference in the life of one child. The Friends Program needs adult volunteers (age 18 and older) to mentor children, ages 6-17 in the Kearsarge region. Volunteers are needed to spend 1-2 hours a week in a one-on-one relationship with a child to provide support, encouragement, a listening ear, and fun!   Volunteers choose to meet with a child at a local school or take a child out in the community. Volunteers are needed for children at elementary and middle schools in: Sunapee, Bradford, Warner, New London, Newport, and Grantham

 Member Focus

If location is one of the most important factors when considering a business, then Innkeepers Karen and Bill Carruth are lucky individuals indeed! Their 1806 Inn is the local lodging located  the closest  to Mount Sunapee Resort, a place well-known to hikers, skiers, snowboarders, and others in search of adventure and incredible panoramic views.

A short stroll through the gardens and beyond and visitors find themselves standing on the shore of one of our local treasures-the beautiful Lake Sunapee State Beach. Also a short stroll away are local restaraunts, some shopping, and a world-class spa!  The 1806 Inn is a great place to stay any time of year with springtime opportunities including biking as well as the solitude of the local walking trails, and lets not forget New Hampshire's sensational fall foliage! With both the Mountain and the Lake so close at hand, you can rest assured that there are always a variety of events for guests to enjoy.

Prior to their present duties as innkeepers, the Carruuths owned and ran a bookstore, and their love of literature followed them to the 1806, where each of their five guests rooms bears the name of a prominent New England author.

For more information about this wonderfully cozy and inviting place to stay, take an online tour at www.1806inn.com or please give Karen and Bill a call at 603-763-2040.

What on Earth is a Breakfast Before
Hours and a Business After Hours?

BBH and BAH are two of the greatest opportunities to meet, greet, network and market local businesses and organizations.

Breakfast Before Hours is often sponsored by inns and restaurants in-house or by organizations and businesses that do not have enough space for a BAH. It usually runs from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and includes a light breakfast for $5.00 per person (the cost of breakfast). There is a speaker either highlighting their business/organization or giving our members valuable information on you-need-to-know topics. BBH is an outstanding networking and marketing opportunity for members and sponsors.

Business After Hours usually extends from 5:30-7:00p.m. and is held by businesses and organizations generally in-house. They offer hors d'oeuvres and beverages to their guests and show off their place of business. There generally is no speaker. BAH is also an excellent networking and marketing opportunity for Chamber members.

Any Chamber member is free to sponsor either a BBH or a BAH. Simply call Ingrid of ISee Consulting at 369-3422 or Bernie of Huberts at 526-4032 and we will be more than happy to help you schedule the best date. We try to schedule one BBH or BAH per month and are now booking into the new year, so please call one of us soon!
 Business Joke of the Month

Memo Degredation

Memo from CEO to Manager:
Today at 11 o'clock there will be a total eclipse of the sun. This is when the sun disappears behind the moon for two minutes. As this is something that cannot be seen every day, time will be allowed for
employees to view the eclipse in the parking lot. Staff should meet in the lot at ten to eleven, when I will deliver a short speech introducing the eclipse, and giving some background information. Safety goggles will be made available at a small cost.

Memo from Manager to Department Head:
Today at ten to eleven, all staff should meet in the car park. This will be followed by a total eclipse of the sun, which will appear for two minutes. For a moderate cost, this will be made safe with goggles. The CEO will deliver a short speech beforehand to give us all some information. This is not something that can be seen every day.

Memo from Department Head to Floor Manager:
The CEO will today deliver a short speech to make the sun disappear for two minutes in the form of an eclipse. This is something that cannot be seen every day, so staff will meet in the car park at ten or eleven. This will be safe, if you pay a moderate cost.

Memo From Floor Manager to Supervisor:
Ten or eleven staff are to go to the car park, where the CEO will eclipse the sun for two minutes. This doesn't happen every day. It will be safe, and as usual it will cost you.

Memo from Supervisor to staff:
Some staff will go to the car park today to see the CEO disappear. It is a pity this doesn't happen everyday.

Spotlight on things to do and see in the area.

Bradford Bog, Bradford, NH
Description: Located in a secluded area of central NH, Bradford Bog affords the rewards of silence and solitude in addition to an up-close view of one of the state’s northernmost Atlantic white cedar swamps. A variety of natural community types occur at Bradford Bog, and some of them, like the inland Atlantic white cedar swamp itself, are considered exemplary. From the trailhead south of the road, a boardwalk leads through densely forested swamp out to a small wooden observation tower overlooking an exemplary medium level fen system. Atlantic white cedar, hemlock, and spruce are all common in the forest, whereas black spruce and larch are the dominant trees out on the semi-open peatland. Several species of showy wildflowers bloom along the trail in the spring and early summer.

Directions: From Rte. 9 in Hillsborough, go northwest on Hillsborough Center and East Washington Roads about 9 miles to East Washington, the northeast on East Washington Road about half a mile. Park on the right and take the trail in to the swamp. Along the way several faint, unmarked side trails spur off into the dark cedar swamp. These are well worth the short excursion as here you will see an even lusher forest floor of mosses and decaying cedar trunks. The distance one-way is approximately a quarter of a mile.

Create a welcoming environment for your customers:

Good customer service can begin as simply as saying “hello” to customers the second they walk in your store. By greeting customers when they first enter, you send a message that you recognize them and appreciate their business. Even if the employee cannot help the customer right away, or even if the customer is just there to browse (for that visit, at least), a warm welcome sets the tone for a good experience in your store.

Few things can be more off-putting to a customer than being completely ignored while in your shop. Not only is ignoring people bad customer service, it’s downright rude.
