MOUNT KEARSARGE INDIAN MUSEUM
Like many grand endeavors, it all started with a dream. The dreamer? Charles "Bud" Thompson, whose life was forever changed on the day that Grand Chief Sachem Silverstar walked into his second grade classroom in 1929. Silverstar's philosophy emphasized individual uniqueness as well as their interconnectedness to all other life. He told the children that they each had a special power, a talent, that could make the world a better place.
Many years later, Bud and his wife Nancy created this "Museum with a Voice," whose mission is to connect people of today with 20,000 years of "ongoing Native American cultural expression." Their website states that it "embraces cultural diversity, encourages responsible environmental action based on respect for nature...and seeks to challenge and inspire {visitors} to improve the quality of our lives and our world." And if the numbers of visitors are any indication-250,000 visitors from the US and 34 foreign countries and educational group tours offered to over 85,000 children since the museum's founding 17 years ago, there are many people interested in hearing what this museum has to "say."
The mueum is open to the public seven days a week ALMOST the whole year through, only closing from December 16 through April 14. The last big event of 2007 will take place on November 24 and 25 with the annual "Winter Celebration," where visitors can enjoy museum tours, ongoing demonstrations, storytelling and music. Warm yourself in the museums gift shops and you may find yourself coming away with some holiday gifts as you peruse the many unique items made by Native Americans from throughout the country. The museum's galleries, Medicine Woods Nature Trail, grounds and galleries are all designed as teaching tools in addition to being "tranquility zones" offering visitors an opportunity to "find respite from the hectic place of modern life."
If you would like to learn more about the Mount Kearsarge Indian Museum, or need directions, you can find all the information you need at the Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum website, a wonderfully designed site that is a joy to visit and from which all of the information for this article was obtained. The Museum's address is Kearsarge Mountain Road, Warner NH 03278, and their phone number is 456-3244.
So, as the museum says, "Come meet the original locals!" You'll be glad you did.
