Business Marketing Tips

Google Maps offers Localized Coupons
From The Wall Street Journal Online

Google Inc. unveiled a free service that will let businesses offer printable coupons to consumers through Google Maps several months ago.

The Mountain View, Calif., Internet company hopes the move will help to increase the popularity of the localized search service and extend its reach among small businesses.

Revenue from the service will follow in coming months, when Google said it will enable advertisers that buy its keyword advertisements to drive search traffic directly to their coupon pages. Since the coupons will be hosted by Google Maps, they will be usable by small businesses with or without Web sites of their own.

Starting Tuesday, businesses that want to offer coupons will be able to go to the Local Business Center area of Maps -- the place where businesses can provide up-to-date information about themselves -- and enter information about their special offers and upload an image. The coupons can be printed out and then redeemed at stores, making them useful to small businesses that don't have online stores.

"It's completely free for the merchant and the user," said Gokul Rajaram, director of product management at Google. "Whatever the [sales] conversion rate, it's going to be a big win for the merchant."

Because their use is so easily tracked, the coupons could also help to convince small businesses that advertising online, including on Google Maps, is effective and worthwhile.

"This is a very tangible result from online marketing. And right now, it's free, so that's pretty appealing," said Greg Sterling of Sterling Market Intelligence, a research and consulting firm in Oakland, Calif.

As part of the initiative, Google said it has partnered with Valpak Direct Marketing Systems Inc., a unit of Atlanta-based Cox Enterprises Inc., to provide coupons to Google Maps. Valpak, which sends out millions of blue envelopes full of coupons each year to consumers' homes, will provide 20,000 coupons from Valpak advertisers that will be updated daily.

Chamber Press Release
New London Information Booth

December 7, 2006

New London, NH - Groundbreaking for the New London Information Booth was held on December 7, 2006.

Fundraising for the building project has been ongoing through the Lake Sunapee Region Chamber of Commerce, which operated out of the existing information booth this year from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. The new building plans include constructing a booth to be open year-round and to contain a handicapped-accessible public restroom.

"We have had more than 80 cash donations totaling over $20,000, and seven in-kind donations, including a roof, restroom fixtures, a computer, landscaping, and construction and from the Town of New London," reported Marybeth Angeli of Angeli & Associates, chair of the building committee for the chamber. "We are more than halfway toward our goal.  Donors of $1,000 or over will be listed on a plaque inside the booth."
The effort to build a new booth has been supported by many, including New London Inn's  Thursday's Child program last March 30th,  significant contributions from several local banks, a grant from Hannaford's, several real estate companies and multiple individual and community organizations in addition to the Town of New London.
"The Lake Sunapee Region Chamber of Commerce serves as the main information source for the region and having a year-round office is crucial. Retail shops, lodging and dining choices and tourism in all of the area towns are all a huge part of the economy in this region," chamber president Ingrid Braulini said.

All donations can be mailed to the chamber at PO Box 532, New London, 03257 or taken to Ledyard National Bank on Main Street in New London.
